Mothers' affection for their babies pays off long termStrong emotional bonds with love and physical affection shown between mums and their children,  is a key to the child’s resilience and health later in life.

Early nurturing and warmth from mothers (or other primary caregivers) has long-lasting positive effects on mental health well into adulthood, new research  in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health reports.

Scientists studied nearly 500 people in Rhode Island who had been assessed at the age of 8 months, and who now had a mean age of 34.

Dr Joanna Maselko found that high levels of maternal affection were associated with significantly lower distress in adults. The grown ups were especially found to be less anxious, but they handled all types of stress better.
