A UK think tank says that banning social networking sites at work could reduce organisational productivity, the BBC reports.

The Demos study suggests social networking sites should not be dismissed as time wasters as they have the potential to improve communication amongst workers in the same company.

Picking up the story, the Australian Institute of Management told its members:”The researchers predict some employers may try to bolster productivity in the wake of the current economic downturn by limiting staff access to social networking sites.

“However, this approach is described ‘counter-intuitive’ as businesses that offer freedom and flexibility are said to be more capable of maintaining stability during difficult times.”
